Technology makes it easier to be productive without being in the office, and working remotely has become routine for many employees. We wanted to know how prevalent it is today. We tackled the question from two perspectives.

First, we wanted to know what percent of businesses have employees who work remotely. We asked 2,852 respondents what percent of their organization’s employees work from home or on the road. More than one-third (35%) report that at least 10% of their organization’s employees work from home and on the road. Here’s the full breakdown:

• More than 50% of employees work remotely – 11%
• 10% to 50% of employees work remotely – 24%
• Less than 10% of employees work remotely – 32%
• No employees work remotely – 32%
• Don’t know – 1%

We also wanted to know how much time employees spend working remotely from non-home locations (such as airports, coffee shops, customer sites, etc.). We asked 517 business managers who ever work outside of their primary workplace premises, and more than two-thirds (68%) do so regularly, and almost one-third (30%) spend more than half their time working from remote locations. Here are those numbers:

• More than 50% of time spent working from remote (non-home) location – 30%
• 10% to 50% of time spent working from remote (non-home) location – 38%
• Less than 10% of time spent working from remote (non-home) location – 22%
• No time spent working from remote (non-home) location – 8%
• Don’t know – 2%

That’s a lot of remote hours being logged!
